I am delighted to have been selected as a finalist for the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Award 2020, in the World Food Programme Food For Life category. It’s a privilege to be able to document stories such as this as part of my work. I’ve spent many years working with people facing challenges – there is always something to learn from other humans who despite their difficult circumstances face each new day with hope and openness. I try to create photographs that celebrate humanity, I believe that this is especially important when the stories I engage with and learn about are difficult to hear. Being selected as a finalist will bring the story of these young ex-child soldiers to a much broader audience – this platform will enable more people than ever before to bear witness to their relentless tenacity and humanity despite the most appalling circumstances.

An ex-child soldier stands with his cows in Leer county, Unity State, South Sudan
Endemic conflict has created generations of child soldiers in South Sudan. Stolen from their families, denied education, stability and community, as adults they often return to the only life they know – the militias. Supported by UNICEF, the NGO VSF Suisse provides livestock and education to ex-child soldiers, breaking this cycle.
