Artist Caroline Bergvall asked me to create a body of work for a collaborative project. The resulting images are macro explorations of an image of migrants lost at sea in the 2011 ‘Left to Die Boat’ tragedy. In this way, the macro processing of the image does not de-sensitise the content by making it abstract, but activates it beyond its original purpose – beyond the dossiers and official reports, beyond the consumed and discarded newspapers and on-line articles. Like the reconnaissance plane, the macro works hone in on a tiny event, a speck of tragedy in the vast sea – magnified.
The images were used to illustrate a book exploring the tragedy, as well as exhibited at Callicoon Fine Arts, in New York City.
